Count Me In
God of this City, part 2
The question we want to ask and answer is this - does God want me to care about this city in such a way that I offer myself up to be used to bring God to this city? We offer ourselves up to be used for the job because we must provide financially. We offer ourselves up for our families. We offer ourselves up for sports, we offer ourselves to be used in many areas, but today ask yourself does God want you to care about this city so much that you choose to offer yourself up to bring God to this city? That’s the question. Today, we will discuss ways to figure it out, and we will show you three videos. I thought it was important to share with you our stories. The stories of how God answered that question for us. Today, you will hear my story, Jimmy’s story and pastor Adam’s story of how God wanted us to care about this city so much that I left my legal career, Pastor Adam moved across the country and Jimmy turned down huge opportunities because this is the place that God impressed upon our hearts – why – because God has chosen to be God of this city, and he has greater things to be done in this city. God is not done with this city, not by any means; in my opinion God has just begun…and greater things are still to be done. You need to decide if you want to be a part of the wave that is coming upon this city. God is moving here, right now, and God wants to know – will you join him.
The bible does not teach that decisions like this are made on pure emotion. At some churches you would be subjected to emotionally charged songs, emotionally charged stories and then asked to make a purely emotional decision. When you do that, the emotion will wear off eventually and you will abandon your emotionally charged decision. Instead, the bible teaches us to understand God’s desire, his will for our lives. If God wants something for us, then He promised to make that known to us. The question today is this – does God want you to care about this city in such a way that you offer yourself up to be used to bring God to this city, our talk is designed to give you the tools to hear God, to discern what is going on in your head and heart so that you can use your mind, your desires, and your emotions to answer the question.
The first thing you must note is that if you are a believer in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, then as his child you will know when God speaks to you. You will not miss it, you will not confuse it. Just as your children know your voice, or just as your pet knows your voice when you call, we know the voice of the one true God. John 10:27 “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:4 “…his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” Jesus is referred to as the Good Shepherd and we his children who believe are referred to as his sheep. The sheep know his voice, likewise, we will know the voice of God when He speaks to us. When I consider this incredible truth two biblical situations jump to mind: first is a man named Jonah who heard and knew God’s voice but chose to run away from God. Jonah 1:1-3 “The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me." But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.” Clearly, Jonah heard God, yet he ran away from God. Please note one very interesting thing. God had greater things to be done for a city…a city called Nineveh. God was not finished with that city, and he called a man to go and bring God to that city for God wanted to show them greater things. The second example is Isaiah. Isaiah was a believer and he was given an incredible vision of the Lord and he heard God speak to him. Isaiah 6:8 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Two men both heard God speak to them, one runs from God and the other obeys God. The biblical principle is that God speaks to his people, the people hear and know the voice of God. The question is whether you will obey or keep running. Let me show you a video of how God made this biblical principle in my life as God called me to care about this city in such a way that I choose to offer myself to be used to bring God to this city.
The second truth in understanding God’s will and his desire for your life is that He loves you so much that he will keep coming back to you over and over again so that you get it. He will not let you miss it. He will persist; he will not go away; he loves you so much that he wants you to choose the right path; and, until you get it he will chase after you to win you to hear him and obey him. There is a great story that teaches this principle. 1 Samuel 3 “The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am." And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down. Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.' "So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
Let me show you a video of how God made this biblical principle in Jimmy’s life as God called Jimmy and Ashley to care about this city in such a way that they chose to offer themselves to be used to bring God to this city. [Jimmy’s video]

The third truth in understanding God’s will and his desire for your life is he uses a few key resources most of the time – in fact, I would say these methods are used 95% of the time to discern God’s wisdom when deciding your direction. God’s resources are (1) the Bible, (2) prayer, (3) godly people in our life, (4) the wisdom of church leaders, and (5) life’s circumstances.
The Bible is always your first resource in understanding God’s will. The Bible tells us many things that God is for and many things God is against. If you are parents and are trying to decide if you should be involved in a church to raise your kids up spiritually, the bible will tell you God’s will is a big yes on that one. Prayer is the second resource. Knowing what God has written, then go to prayer asking God to bring life to his written word, specifically to your situation. God controls your brain, he is in charge of your thoughts and can have great power in influencing your will. The third resource is godly people. Find godly friends and ask them for their advice. What people are you currently getting advice from? Go to godly people, people who know the Bible, people who pray, people who will consider your situation in light of the Bible. You will be tempted to run to these people before going to the bible and prayer, but don’t; this is your third resource. The fourth resource is church leadership – your pastors, your church leaders like deacons who are spiritually qualified men. This is a great resource because often times our godly friends want to make us happy, and are unwilling to say difficult things. Church leadership may offer a more unbiased perspective. The last and least important of the five resources is life circumstances. You may experience a situation or things might just fall into place or whatever this is never used as a primary resource; it should be used only to confirm the previous four resources. I see most people rely almost entirely on circumstances. For example, a job just opened up and it pays more…that is what we were looking for honey…pack up the kids we are moving. God uses difficult situations not to cause us to abandon what we are doing but to get our attention.
Let me show you a video of how God used this biblical principle in Adam’s life as God called Adam and Kristen to care about this city in such a way that they chose to offer themselves to be used to bring God to this city. [Adam’s video]

The question I have asked you is this - does God want you to care about this city in such a way that you will offer yourself up to be used to bring God to this city? For Pastor Adam, Jimmy and me, the answer is God revealed his desire, his will for us to bring God to this city. Our church is about to lean in to our community in ways you have never seen, probably ways you would not expect. It will be big, it will be powerful; I plan to share more at the Good Friday service and a big reveal next week on Easter. We simply ask this – join us – the movement has already been launched so jump on the wave that is about to hit this city as we bring God to this city.
